Let us introduce you to the SPUD – the Spontaneous Pop-up Display (SPUD) by Arovia, which is essentially a portable 24-inch monitor that can collapse and expand like an umbrella. It’s the product of a Kickstarter campaign that is still running as of the date of this writing. The SPUD is basically an umbrella monitor and it sure looks promising due to the extremely good portability, making it ideal for any person on the go. It weighs less than 2lbs according to Arovia and it fits easily in your purse, laptop bag, backpack and even your jacket pockets! Yes, 2017 will be the year where you can start walking around with a monitor in your jacket pockets. What a time to be alive.
The SPUD uses the latest DLP technology and combines it with custom optics to create a sharp and bright image for us. You can connect the SPUD to a smartphone, laptop, tablet and PC wherever you are via a wireless adapter or an HDMI cable.
This product can be used for a huge variety of scenarios – you can watch movies on the go or perhaps be more productive while not in the office. The SPUD is said to optimize the visual experience on any device. Tired of using your tiny smartphone screen? You can easily connect the SPUD to your iPhone or iPad via a Lightning Digital AV Adapter and an HDMI cable, or you could also use Chromecast, Fire TV stick or a Roku stick as well.
Looking at the SPUD product itself, it’s 24-inches in the diameter. This is 23 times more screen real estate than a 5.1-inch smartphone screen and 4 times more screen real estate than a 13-inch laptop. Have a look at the video below to see a presentation of the display by Arovia.
Arovia promises that the screen is highly durable despite its flexibility. It’s supposedly using a flexible polymer that can not get chipped or cracked. It’s also completely washable if it gets dirty as well. The 24-inch display also comes with a casing that can keep the product protected while you are not using it. Its dimensions are 5.64″ wide (14,3cm), 2.17″ high (5.5cm), 7.52″ long (19,1cm).
The SPUD is essentially the ultimate portable monitor or portable TV. It’s a screen that you can use anywhere, and a good place would be at work, since two monitors can be a great productivity booster. You can also use it as a presentation tool, sales visits, field work and for trade shows as well, just to name a few scenarios where you could use this display. And yes, you can use this a gaming monitor as well on the go.
Of course, the SPUD uses a battery. It lasts for a specified 4 hours to 10 hours (depending on the brightness setting). It has a native resolution of 1280×720 as well and a native refresh rate of 120Hz. The SPUD also features inbuilt stereo speakers and maximum brightness of 785 nits.
You can read more about the Spontaneous Pop-up Display (SPUD) on the official Kickstarter page linked to at the top of this screen. It is estimated that deliveries will take places in June 2017, so there’s still a long way to go.
