Viotek GN34C Review: Affordable FreeSync 100Hz UltraWide Gaming Monitor

By November 28, 2017 One Comment

If you’re looking for an amazing and enormous ultra-wide curved gaming monitor, there is a display that won’t break your bank yet it will deliver everything that much more expensive monitors do.

The Viotek GN34C is a gorgeous 34-inch 1440p curved 100Hz gaming monitor and in this review, you’ll see why it’s one of the best gaming monitors you could possibly get for the price of $550-$600.

Image Quality

The Viotek GN34C 100Hz gaming monitor is based on a VA panel that thanks to its high static contrast ratio of 3,000:1 delivers an amazing image quality unmatched by other panels. The relation between the darkest and the brightest colors is clearly emphasized while the black tones are truly black, not just dark-gray.

Although the colors aren’t as consistent as they are on IPS panel displays, the VA panel of the Viotek GN34C covers 85% of the NTSC color gamut, which is slightly over 100% sRGB. In combination with the high contrast ratio, the picture quality is immersive and engaging with intense colors though those seeking a monitor for color-critical work will still have to opt for an IPS panel monitor with more accurate colors.

The UWQHD 3440×1440 screen resolution offers a rich pixel density of 109.68 PPI (Pixels Per Inch) meaning that even though the monitor features a large 34-inch screen, the picture is crisp with vivid details and plenty screen real estate.

The 21:9 aspect ratio takes gaming and movie watching to a whole new level. While most of the latest video games do support the 21:9 format natively, with certain games, especially the older ones, you will have to play with black borders on the sides. Movies, on the other hand, are entirely supported and are in fact closer to their native 2.39:1 aspect ratio which is used for filming.

You can find a list of games that support 21:9 here while for web surfing and other multimedia activities you can download ultrawide video extension for your browser.

The Viotek GN34C input lag is imperceptible and along with the quick 4ms response time and 100Hz refresh rate, gameplay is smooth and responsive. There is some ghosting and motion blur present when playing fast-paced games, particularly visible is trailing of dark pixels. To eliminate most of these artifacts, you can enable the Overdrive setting in the OSD (On-Screen Display) menu.

Furthermore, if you have an AMD FreeSync-compatible GPU, you can synchronize the Viotek GN34C refresh rate to the graphics card’s frame rate. The result is the dynamic refresh rate which eliminates screen tearing and stuttering. Additionally, your FPS (Frames Per Second) rate will be more stable and less prone to fluctuate, at no cost of higher input lag.

The Viotek GN34C FreeSync range amounts to a rather narrow 80Hz-100Hz, however, it’s possible to extend it to 40Hz-100Hz via the Custom Resolution Utility, and here’s how to.

In the OSD menu, you’ll find many useful features including the Picture in Picture and Picture by Picture modes which make displaying multiple input sources on the screen simple and quick. Navigation through the user-friendly OSD is a breeze thanks to the controls placed beneath the screen.

Additionally, there are pre-calibrated picture presets for FPS and RTS game genres as well as the Low Blue Light mode for a comfortable viewing experience when reading at night without eye strain. The monitor doesn’t use PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) to regulate brightness, so it’s flicker-free and won’t cause headaches to those sensitive to them.

As expected, colors aren’t as accurate as they are on the IPS panel monitors, but they are intense and vibrant with excellent grayscale performance. There’s no evident backlight bleeding nor dead pixels whatsoever.

Design and Connectivity

The design of the Viotek GN34C isn’t as flashy and premium as the more expensive and popular counterparts. However, the stand is sturdy and bezels are relatively thin. The monitor is tilt-only and it’s not VESA mount compatible, so you’ll need a separate adapter if you wish to place it on the wall or a mounting arm.

The bezels are plastic and glossy while the screen is coated with a matte anti-glare coating. The 1800R curvature makes for an immersive and cinematic viewing experience by wrapping your peripheral vision into the gaming world. Connector ports include a Dual-Link DVI, an HDMI, a DisplayPort, and the headphones jack. It’s available as a black and as a white model.

Price & Similar Monitors

The Viotek GN34C price varies between $550-$600. At both price tags, the monitor is by far the most affordable 100Hz ultra-wide gaming monitor. A comparable monitor would be the Microboard M340CLZ though it requires tinkering and adjusting out of the box in order to make it as good as the Viotek GN34C display.

Other 34-inch ultrawide gaming monitors by more popular brands such as the ASUS MX34VQ and the Samsung CF791 are up to $200 expensive yet you get pretty much the same gameplay performance but with extra features and ornamental gimmicks.

The Viotek GN34C 1440p ultrawide gaming monitor is the most budget-friendly option in this tier of displays. The UWQHD resolution and the high-contrast VA panel ensure stunning image quality and immersion while the excellent input lag performance and native 100Hz refresh rate guarantee gameplay fluidity.

Ghosting and motion blur of dark pixels is evident in fast-paced games which is expected from a VA panel. It’s a worthy trade-off for such high contrast ratio and if you prefer better visuals over clearer performance for competitive gaming, you’re definitely gonna love the Viotek GN34C.

It may not have a particularly eye-catching design nor extra accessories such as built-in speakers, USB ports, and versatile ergonomics, but it will provide you with an awesome gaming experience and save you some cash you could invest in a new CPU or a graphics card instead.
