When watching Full HD 1080p content on the 1440p monitor, a video player uses upscaling (or upconversion) process which matches the number of pixels in order to deliver the full-screen viewing experience. When playing 1920 x 1080 max resolution games on a 1440p monitor, you will have to lower the resolution and the image quality will be considerably worse as you’ll be sitting close to the screen and be more immersed in it as opposed to while watching a movie. Alas, most games support even 4K resolutions, and more and more oldschool and popular games are getting remastered, so that shouldn’t be an issue.
The main difference between 1440p and 1080p resolution monitors when it comes to gaming is the computer equipment requirements needed to fluently run games at such resolution. For instance, to maintain 60 FPS (Frames Per Second) at WQHD resolution, you will preferably want either a NVIDIA 970 GTX or AMD R9 390. While running video games at maximum settings, 60 FPS, and 1080p requires affordable graphics cards such as the AMD R9 290 or NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti.
The requirements get more demanding in both scenarios if you wish to play at 144Hz. For smooth gameplay at 144Hz on 1080p we recommend a GTX 1070, and on 1440p a GTX 1080. In short, if you’re on the fence between a 1080p vs 1440p gaming monitor, be sure to check the GPU and CPU requirements for latest games. If you can afford such setup, a 1440p monitor will be a game changing upgrade. For everyday use and professional work, the 2560 x 1440 resolution makes for a luxuriously spacious yet affordable display, but not at all crucial in comparison to the standard 1920 x 1080 Full HD. If still undecided, you can always opt for the middle ground and get a 2560 x 1080 monitor.
