With a better graphics card, you wouldn’t need variable refresh rate to keep your FPS from fluctuating at 1080p and 144Hz.

Furthermore, if you’re a strictly competitive gamer, you most likely won’t be limiting your refresh rate anyway. In this case, you should consider getting a 240Hz gaming monitor which costs roughly the same if you get the FreeSync version. Having said all that, the Acer XB241H does offer its share of perks.

Display & Performance

Unlike the previously mentioned 144Hz gaming monitors, the Acer XB241H can be overclocked to a whopping 180Hz. Now, such difference is not nearly as noticeable as 60Hz vs 144Hz, but it adds a bit of extra immersion and fluidity if that’s something you’re looking for.

In addition, the Acer XB241H features Nvidia’s ULMB (Ultra Low Motion Blur) which further eliminates ghosting when enabled. Keep in mind that ULMB only works at fixed refresh rates (144Hz max) and cannot be active at the same time as G-SYNC, unless some tinkering is involved.

The alternative to the Acer ED273 144Hz monitor would be the Samsung C27FG70 which has a better image quality and a faster response time due to the quantum-dot and 1ms MPRT technologies. However, the Samsung CFG70 is also a lot more expensive. In fact, you could get a 1440p 144Hz gaming monitor with a TN or an IPS panel instead for the same amount of money.

Display & Performance

If a 1440p 144Hz gaming monitor, as well as the PC rig required for it, is out of your budget, the Acer ED273 may be just for you. While the IPS panel and the WQHD resolution ensure brilliant image quality, the 144Hz refresh rate (overclockable to 165Hz), G-SYNC, and ULMB (works at 120Hz, 100Hz, and 85Hz) take care of the performance. Though the 4ms response time speed isn’t as quick and effective as that of some previously mentioned monitors, motion blur and ghosting is not all that visible. In fact, unless you’re a professional FPS gamer, you most likely won’t even be able to notice it.

So, the panel is a bit behind the AOC’s model in terms of specs, but the picture quality is still great due to the 4K resolution and vibrant colors.

The LG 29UM68 is the cheapest ultrawide gaming monitor available yet it offers stunning image quality and immersive viewing experience as well as a cool looking design with thin bezels.

The LG 29UM68 monitor is based on an 8-bit IPS panel with the 2560×1080 ultra-wide resolution and 21:9 aspect ratio. The pixel density amounts to ~95 PPI which is more pixels per inch than the 2560×1440 resolution on a 32-inch screen, meaning you can expect maximum detail and plenty of screen real estate.

If you haven’t experienced the ultra-wide aspect ratio yet, it may take you some time getting used to it as the monitor may look way too wide for its height at first. The LG 29UM68 is the same height as a 23-inch 16:9 monitor. While the monitor provides an engaging viewing experience for 21:9 compatible games, you will have to settle for black borders at the sides or stretched picture for unsupported games.

If you’re looking for the best 144Hz ultra-wide gaming monitor that won’t break your budget, the LG 34UC79G FreeSync display is the way to go. The same monitor is available as a G-SYNC variant too – the LG 34UC89G, though it costs over $250 more.

Display & Performance

The only downside of the LG 34UC79G is the 2560×1080 resolution which can make small items such as text and icons appear pixelated and smudgy. In games, however, you won’t be affected by it as much, especially if you sit a bit further from the screen.

Note that there aren’t any other 120Hz+ 1080p ultra-wide IPS models besides these two by LG and the Dell AW3418HW which is a LOT more expensive due to G-SYNC and 160Hz overclocking. Sure, some VA-panel ultrawides offer up to 200Hz, but due to their panel type, ghosting and motion blur is a nightmare in fast-paced games on these monitors.

The LG 34UC79G, on the other hand, has minimum ghosting and an additional secret weapon against it, LG’s 1ms Motion Blur Reduction technology. Enabling the 1ms MBR technology in OSD further reduces the perceived motion blur at cost of picture brightness. Also note that it works at fixed refresh rates of 60Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, and 144Hz and that it cannot be active at the same time as FreeSync.

With no motion blur penalty and the combination of high refresh rates and the ultra-wide screen, you gain an additional advantage point in competitive FPS games, as the ultrawide resolution provides you with a wider field of view making it easier to spot enemies in the corners.

In addition to all the common LG features we’ve mentioned for the previous monitor, the LG 34UC79G also offers customizable crosshair overlays for yet another advantage (or a cheat?) in FPS games.

The Viotek GN34C is only a $50 jump from the previously mentioned monitor yet it offers a higher screen resolution of 3440×1440 pixels, a slightly lower refresh rate of 100Hz, and a VA panel with the superior 3,000:1 static contrast ratio. Moreover, it’s ~$200 cheaper than the ultrawide gaming monitors with the same specs from more popular brands such as the ASUS MX34VQ. It also costs half the price than the VA-panel 3440×1440 100Hz G-SYNC ultrawide displays.

Display & Performance

Now that we’ve established what makes this monitor affordable, let’s dive into details. With the stunning 3440×1440 resolution, you can enjoy the incredibly crisp image and vivid details on this giant 34-inch screen. What’s more, the 3,000:1 contrast ratio will make black colors truly black offering a more engaging viewing experience.

Alas, the monitor’s main asset can also be considered as a disadvantage, depending on what type of game you’re playing. Due to the deep black shades, pixels take longer to change from one color into another i.e. slower response time speed, which results in prominent ghosting in fast-paced games even at high frame rates.

Having said all that, the slower-paced games are not affected as much by this. Instead, you’d rather enjoy the eye-catching color vibrancy and intensity. Acer XR342CK

The Acer XR342CK is our favorite ultra-wide monitor and it’s also the cheapest one in this category. The monitor features a high-quality IPS panel, stellar 3440×1440 resolution, AMD FreeSync technology, and a native refresh rate of 75Hz that’s easily overclockable to 100Hz (as shown in the embedded video below) using either AMD or Nvidia GPU.

Display & Performance

On Amazon, you will find two different models of the Acer XR342CK. Both feature a 10-bit (8-bit + FRC) IPS panel with 100% sRGB color gamut and advanced 6-axis adjustments, 178-degree viewing angles, and 5ms (GtG) response time speed. The monitors are also adequate for professional color-critical work as the colors are precise and consistent.

In addition to all that, the more expensive model also offers HDR support via the edge-lit local dimming, the 1ms MPRT (Moving Picture Response Time) technology for less motion blur, and the USB-C port. If you have an extra $100 to invest in the pricier monitor, it’s definitely worth it. If not, the cheaper model will also wow you. The 1ms MPRT technology functions as backlight strobing in order to eliminate motion blur and it cannot be active at the same time as FreeSync.

Regardless of which model you go for, the 3440×1440 resolution and the IPS panel will provide you with an otherworldly picture quality while the 1900R curvature immerses you into the gaming world. Ideally, you want to pair the monitor with the RX 580-8GB at least for 60-75FPS with medium-high settings and FreeSync. For overclocking, you should get an RX Vega card or the GTX 1070 Ti minimum since 3440×1440 at 100Hz requires as much horsepower as 4K at 60Hz.

The Acer X34 and the ASUS ROG Swift PG348Q are basically the G-SYNC versions of the Acer X342CK (the non-HDR model). While it may seem logical to opt for one of these two monitors if you have a Nvidia card, note that they can be about $250-$500 more expensive; whether G-SYNC is worth that much is arguable – because you could alleviate the need for G-SYNC by getting a better GPU with the money you would’ve otherwise spent on the extra cost of the G-SYNC monitor, as opposed to the FreeSync model.

If you really want to go the 3440×1440 at 100Hz G-SYNC and IPS route, you should save up for the pricey but awesome Dell Alienware AW3418DW which overclocks to 120Hz. However, if you’re going to spend $1,000+ on a monitor, you may want to consider the upcoming 4K 144Hz and 3440×1440 200Hz models. Or, you could get the Acer XR382CQK, the 38-inch version of the XR342CK with all the same features and goods, but with a higher screen resolution of 3840×1600.

As you can see, there are many choices for the best ultra-wide gaming monitor in 2018, but when all is said and done, either model of the Acer XR342CK are by far the most affordable choice while ticking all the boxes for an immersive gameplay with professional-grade color quality, fluid performance, and a striking design.

The AOC AG352UCG also features the UQWHD resolution of 3440×1440 pixels, but it runs at 100Hz natively. Moreover, it features a VA panel instead of the IPS and offers Nvidia’s G-SYNC technology. The monitor features the same 8-bit VA panel as the Acer Predator Z35P which can cost up to $400 while offering the same image quality, performance, and most of the features, though the Acer Z35P overclocks to 120Hz. Both monitors lack the ULMB feature.

Display & Performance

So, if you’re torn between IPS or VA panel for your new 3440×1440 100Hz gaming monitor, there are only a few things you should make note of. First of all, the VA panel will offer you higher static contrast ratio which makes for the deep and true blacks.

However, this also means that the pixels will take longer to change back thus causing ghosting and motion blur in fast-paced video games even at high frame rates. The AOC AGON AG352UCG does offer the Overdrive setting which is increases the response time but introduces inverse ghosting or overshooting – which in the end, isn’t any better.

This is why ULMB would’ve been a nice addition to these types of monitors. The ASUS ROG Strix XG35VQ is the only 3440×1440 100Hz ultrawide gaming monitor with some sort of motion blur reduction technology, precisely ASUS’ Extreme Low Motion Blur – but it’s more expensive than the AG352UCG and it has FreeSync, not G-SYNC. To make things worse, the technology barely helps with the motion blur making the IPS ultra-wide models the way to go for the fast-paced games.

If you want those vivid and perfectly black shades, no IPS glow, and less noticeable backlight bleeding, VA models are for you. Keep in mind that you will also be able to spot shifts in contrast when looking at the image from certain angles.

The AOC AG352UCG 3440×1440 ultrawide gaming monitor offers a bunch of features we’ve already mentioned for the previous AOC monitor such as i-Menu, eSaver, and AOC Shadow Control for better visibility in dark games. Additionally, the monitor has RGB LEDs at the bottom bezel and at the back which can shine in red, green, and blue color.

The stand of the monitor is sturdy and made of high-quality aluminum with somewhat thick and glossy bezels while the screen is coated with a light matte anti-glare coating. Full ergonomic support is provided with swivel, tilt, and height adjustments as well as VESA mount compatibility.

As far as connectivity is concerned, there’s a DisplayPort, an HDMI, and two USB 3.0 ports, one of which supports fast charging. In addition, there are two 2W speakers, the headphones jack, and a headphones hook. The screen is curved at 2000R for an immersive and engaging viewing experience.

The Samsung CHG70 is available as a 27-inch model, the Samsung C27HG70 which we’ve recently reviewed, and as the 32-inch Samsung C32HG70.

Display & Performance

The Samsung CHG70 monitors are based on 10-bit VA panels (8-bit + FRC) which use the quantum-dot technology and edge-lit local dimming to further increase color gamut, contrast ratio, and maximum brightness. Once you enable HDR, the peak brightness jumps from the typical 350-nits up to 600 while contrast goes from 2,500:1 to 20,000:1.

Along with the extended color gamut of 125% sRGB (92% Adobe RGB, 95% DCI-P3), the image quality becomes mesmeric. You can enable the 1ms MPRT technology by adjusting the Response Time setting to ‘Faster’ or ‘Fastest’ which enables backlight strobing at either 144Hz, 120Hz, or 100Hz fixed refresh rate.

The Samsung CHG70 has the least amount of ghosting than any 144Hz VA-panel monitor we’ve tested so far; add to that the amazing picture quality, the versatile design, rich connectivity, and the plethora of features, and you have the perfect monitor – even without the HDR.

AMD FreeSync 2 is supported via the HDMI and DP with 48-144Hz dynamic range and LFC support – once you download the latest firmware patch for Samsung’s website and update via the USB port. As usual, the variable refresh rate cannot be active at the same time as the backlight strobing technology i.e. 1ms MPRT.

What makes this giant 49-inch monitor unique is that it’s the only 3840×1080 32:9 gaming display available.

Display & Performance

If you like ultra-wide displays, you’re going to love Samsung’s super-wide resolution with 32:9 aspect ratio and 3840×1080 screen resolution. Though the display may seem as too wide, it’s perfectly curved to wrap your entire peripheral vision and immerse you into whatever you’re doing, be it playing games or working.

To put it into perspective, the Samsung CHG90 is basically two 27-inch 16:9 monitors put next to each other; so, make sure you’ve got enough room on your desk for this giant. Also, note that while some games support the 3840×1080 resolution natively, certain competitive FPS games won’t allow it and will simply stretch the picture as it’d be an unfair advantage. Movies will also have black borders on the sides due to the unsupported format.

In case you’re looking for the best gaming monitor for Xbox One X and PS4 Pro consoles, then you must get a 4K display. If you just want the cheapest 4K monitor that’s actually good, go with the LG 27UD58 we’ve already mentioned in the best 4K monitors category.

If, however, you want something better, the Samsung U32H750 offers a perfect combination of features, performance, and image quality for the price – the only thing that it’s missing is HDR support.

Keep in mind that there aren’t any true HDR monitors available except for the Dell UP2718Q which is aimed at the high-end content creators and therefore way too expensive for mere console gaming (unless you’re a professional content creator yourself).

Some other 4K 60Hz monitors such as the LG 32UD99 and the Dell U2718Q do offer HDR, but only to a certain extent and they also cost extra as they’re intended for professional purposes. Why 144Hz? If you are wondering if you should buy a 144Hz gaming monitor, you should first look at your graphics card. In order to take advantage of refresh rates, you must also get high frame rates in your games. If you can’t get above 60FPS, there’s obviously no point in getting a 144Hz gaming monitor.

On the other hand, you are essentially future-proofing yourself by buying a 144Hz PC gaming monitor as most average gaming monitors don’t have 144Hz and you don’t replace your monitor as often as your PC components, such as your GPU. Perhaps you will buy a more powerful graphics card next year and your 60Hz monitor will not take benefit from the added frame rates above 60 frames per second.

If you are into competitive eSports gaming where fast reaction times are important, such as Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO), you’ll definitely want a 144Hz refresh rate monitor or even beyond 144Hz, such as 165Hz, 180Hz or even 240Hz.

Which Response Time Should I Aim For?

In case you’re not really all that hardcore gamer and would rather have better colors and wider viewing angles go with the IPS panels which still have great pixel transition performance. Lastly, if you’re not into fast-paced gaming at all, you should consider a VA panel which has the best contrast ratio and true blacks but the slowest response time.

Should I Buy a 1080p Gaming Monitor, 1440p Gaming Monitor or a 4K Gaming Monitor?

As we are moving beyond 1080p resolution and graphics cards getting even more powerful, we recommend that you buy a monitor with at least 2560×1440 resolution (1440p, WQHD) in 2018. That way, you can still enjoy 144Hz and 165Hz gaming monitors, while also enjoying a larger resolution.

4K gaming monitors will also become mainstream later, but as of the beginning of 2018, they can only be found with support for a maximum of 60Hz. Perhaps, we’ll even see OLED monitors next year. You should go for a 1080p resolution monitor if you only want a high refresh rate monitor, the resolution doesn’t matter to you, or you are on a budget.

AMD FreeSync or NVIDIA G-SYNC

These technologies are also known as Adaptive-Sync. If your monitor supports Adaptive-Sync, you will not get any screen tearing and it will not come with any performance penalties, unlike V-Sync. If you have a FreeSync-compatible AMD graphics card, you should aim for a FreeSync monitor if you don’t want screen tearing. Likewise, if your NVIDIA GPU supports G-SYNC technology, you should aim for that if you have the budget for it.

AMD FreeSync will not add any cost to the original price of the monitor, whereas G-SYNC adds about $100-$300+ to the original cost of the monitor without the technology. This is because G-SYNC requires the monitor to have a proprietary module inside it, whereas AMD does not.

Essentially, these technologies synchronize the refresh rate of the monitor with the output of frames that your graphics card produces. The difference is that the G-SYNC monitors always have the maximum dynamic range while FreeSync displays have often limited and narrow range – depending on the model.

Which Panel Technology Should I Get?

There are different types of panel technologies that you should be aware of and know the cons and pros of each one of them before searching for a gaming screen.

Let’s start with TN, which stands for Twisted Nematic. This panel technology produces the worst colors and viewing angles of all the others. On the flipside, they are cheap to produce and the response time can get as low as 1 millisecond.

VA, or Vertical Alignment, is another panel technology that sort of lies in the middle ground. AHVA is based on VA panel technology, but it is slightly better. VA panels benefit from high contrast ratios and the color quality is better than TN panels. Viewing angles are also better than TN panels, but not suited for work that requires good color accuracy.

Moving on, we have IPS panels, which are the preferred panel technology of 2018 until OLED becomes popular and mainstream. IPS panels have the best viewing angles and color accuracy but suffer from backlight bleed issues and IPS glow.

Finally, we have the best panel technology of all time, OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode). They are not that mainstream today and very expensive as well because the factories producing them are mostly making them for smartphones and TV displays. We expect this panel technology to become more and more popular as panel technologies evolve.

Is an UltraWide Gaming Monitor Worth It?

If you wish to have a more immersive gaming experience while gaming on your PC, you should buy an ultrawide gaming monitor if you have the budget. With this wider resolution, the game will feel closer to you and it’s overall a great experience for everything else as well such as working, watching movies, etc.

Note that not all games support the 21:9 aspect ratio so you’ll just get black bars on the sides or a stretched picture. HDR Gaming or Gaming Without HDR?

One of the main topics of CES 2018 was HDR and we will definitely be seeing HDR displays coming out soon, such as the ASUS ROG Swift PG27UQ and the Acer Predator XB272-HDR. Look out for FreeSync 2 and G-SYNC HDR as these technologies are the next generation of FreeSync and G-SYNC, and they support HDR as well.

More HDR monitors will definitely come and if you put HDR in an OLED monitor, you will get the ultimate display in terms of color quality. Initially, the price for HDR monitors will be high, but as time progresses and more units are available, the price is going to go down and we can all enjoy HDR gaming at an affordable price. The same principle applies to OLED as well.
